St. Simon Peter Church not only has an active ECW, EYC and Men's Group, the parishioners are committed to projects and programs outside of the traditional ministries of the Episcopal Church such as The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and other organizations as listed below:

United Thank Offering (UTO) is an Episcopal ministry we participate in each year.  Forwarding our monetary gifts to the Diocese and National Church.  From there, the gifts are awarded in the form of grants relating to human needs.  Applications are considered from a worldwide basis, and funds such activities as childcare centers, playgrounds, handicap access to churches, dental care for the poor, after school programs and the like.

Kairos is a volunteer ministry to both those incarcerated and their families.  Kairos brings both the Gospel and fellowship to those who are interested in rededicating their lives to Christ.  This is a ministry of table and fellowship supported by supplies, financial gifts and dedicated volunteers who conduct the weekend “in-gatherings” in the prisons.

Project Adopt a Christmas Family is an annual seasonal event for St Simon Peter.  Each year, two needy families are adopted through coordination with Community Action, and Christmas “wish lists” for the children and adults are fulfilled through parishioners generous giving.  In conjunction with this program, the parish fulfills a broader need through donations of mittens and scarves through the parish “Mitten Tree” for those boys and girls who are in need of such things.

Food for the Poor is an international organization and inter-denominational Christian Ministry working to end the suffering of the poor in the Caribbean and in Latin America.  The organization provides not only food, but shelter for the destitute and water wells for parched villages.  Where possible and affordable, medical assistance is also rendered through local charities and agencies…such as orphanages.  St Simon Peter hosts speakers from Food fro the Poor annually, and supports the program through financial gifts.

One of the most recent ministries that reach out to our incapacitated and homebound parishioners is that of the Visiting Eucharistic Ministers…or VEM’s.  You recognize them each week as we “send them out” as an extension of our Holy Communion each Sunday to visit those who are unable to join us for Sunday’s celebration.  But, this ministry is not one of we should expect just because of personal convenience.  It is reserved for those who, for various reasons that are usually incapacitating, cannot physically get themselves to Sunday’s worship – either by themselves or with the assistance of others.  Each VEMs has been instructed in both the theology and administration of the Eucharist that is carried forth from the Shared Table each week; and, represent an extension of both the Holy Eucharist and the loving community who misses their presence week-to-week.

Our Episcopal Youth Corps (EYC) supports several differing charities through fundraisers and community-related projects.  In 2008, the EYC supported Heifer International by purchasing a water buffalo and goats for a village in Africa.  In 2009, they turned their efforts to a local charity…The St Clair Animal Shelter; where they raised $1000 towards the cause and served as volunteers.

Rector’s Discretionary Account: This account is separate from the parish operating budget; and funds are administered at the “discretion” of your priest to assist those experiencing financial difficulty in meeting their utility obligations.  Although we normally can’t pay the entire bill, we assist to the level we can.  Additionally, we normally coordinate assistance from other local and church organizations through referral.  Like most assistance agencies, this account is held in strict confidentiality…with only the Rector as the signature…and audited annually by an outside agent.

The Yarn Group is a group of dedicated church women who meet and knit Prayer Shawls for those needing support from our parish prayer list and in the local community.  These prayer shawls are blessed during the week at our Holy Eucharist.

The Christian Love Pantry is a food bank that serves the greater Pell City community.  Started by parishioners of this parish, the Pantry is supported through financial donations, dedicated offerings, food gifts collected and by volunteers.
